The bigger pattern
This fits a long line of escalating Musk forecasts. He has suggested AGI could arrive as early as 2026, that a single model might outthink any individual human around 2027, and that artificial superintelligence could begin emerging around 2030 or 2031.
The xAI and Tesla chief ties all of this to economic abundance, arguing that intelligent machines will take on much of today's manufacturing, logistics, and construction work, driving down the cost of goods and services. That vision underpins Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot, which Musk has called potentially more important to the company than cars.
Why to take it with a grain of salt
Musk is not a neutral observer. He runs xAI, whose Grok models compete directly in this market, so bullish predictions also serve his fundraising. His forecasts are often premature, most famously on fully self-driving Teslas, which he has promised were close for years while the technology kept being refined.
Experts are divided too. Some expect steady, incremental progress that stops short of broad human-level reasoning, while others warn of sharp capability jumps as computing power scales.
