Meta Launched A Private AI Chat, Then Said Your AI Chats Feed Your Ads

  • Meta launched Incognito Chat with Meta AI, saying conversations run where even Meta cannot see them.

  • Separately, Meta confirmed your Meta AI chats will shape the ads you see, with no way out.

  • Both are true at the same time, and the difference between them is the whole story.

Two Meta announcements, months apart, pointing in exactly opposite directions. Read them together.

The private one

Meta Launched A Private AI Chat, Then Said Your AI Chats Feed Your Ads

Meta launched Incognito Chat with Meta AI on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app on May 13, describing it as a completely private way to interact with AI. Conversations are processed in a secure environment that even Meta cannot see, and disappear by default.

The reasoning Meta gave is sound. Chatting with AI has become a critical way people get information and ask important questions, and those questions can be deeply sensitive: health issues, loan details, career advice. Anyone who has typed a symptom into a chatbot knows the feeling.

The technical claim is more than marketing. Incognito Chat is built on WhatsApp's Private Processing technology. Meta drew a direct line to rivals, noting other apps have incognito-style modes but can still see the questions coming in and the answers going out.

More is coming. Meta plans to introduce Sidechat protected by Private Processing, giving you private AI help inside any WhatsApp chat with context of what is being discussed, without disrupting the main conversation.

The other one

Your chats with Meta AI will start affecting what ads you see on Facebook and Instagram, and there is no way to opt out.

Put the two announcements side by side and the picture snaps into focus. Incognito Chat is not Meta deciding your AI conversations are private. It is Meta building a specific, opt-in room where they are, and telling you that everywhere else, they are not.

That is not dishonest. Meta said both things publicly. But most people will read the Incognito headline, feel reassured, and never switch it on.

Here is the practical advice. If you would not want a conversation shaping your ad profile forever, use Incognito Chat deliberately. Default mode is default for a reason, and the default is not private.

Meta also rolled out paid subscription plans for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp this year, with AI plans coming. The industry is quietly settling on the same answer: you can have privacy or you can have free, and increasingly you will be asked to choose.
