OpenAI has released a new update for ChatGPT mobile apps. The update adds a Thinking Mode toggle to iOS and Android.
This feature gives users more control over how ChatGPT answers questions. It first appeared on desktop.
Now it is available on mobile too. The rollout started on December 29.
The new option helps users choose between faster replies and deeper thinking.
ChatGPT Thinking Mode: Adds Toggle on iOS and Android

The new toggle lets users switch between Standard Thinking and Extended Thinking.
It works when using ChatGPTโs reasoning model. Before this update, mobile users had no choice. The app always used Standard Thinking.
Now, Plus users can decide how much time ChatGPT spends thinking before it replies.
Thinking mode options explained:
- Standard Thinking
- Faster replies
- Uses less computing power
- Good for simple questions
- Default mode for most users
- Extended Thinking
- Slower but deeper answers
- Better for complex problems
- Uses more reasoning time
- Ideal for research and planning
Desktop users received this feature in September. Mobile users now get the same level of control.

Extended Thinking was once the default for Plus users. OpenAI changed this to give users more choice and better speed control.
OpenAI also shared that updates will continue. The company wants to improve how users interact with ChatGPT across devices. The Thinking Mode toggle is part of that goal.
The update is rolling out slowly. Some users may see it later than others.
