Mozilla enters the AI browser battle with a new feature called AI Window in Firefox. AI tools like ChatGPT Atlas, and Perplexity’s Comet are already on the market. The Firefox AI browser now aims to win back users from Google Chrome. The browser market is crowded, and Chrome still dominates. With AI Window, Mozilla wants to offer a smarter and more helpful browsing experience to attract users.

What does the new Firefox AI Browser offer?

Firefox AI browser rolls out

Mozilla says it wants AI to act like a “trusted companion” instead of trapping users in endless chat. The AI Window will appear as a private browsing mode that users can turn on only if they want it.

Key features of the Firefox AI browser AI Window:

  • Works as an optional private window inside Firefox
  • Lets users chat with an AI assistant while browsing
  • Helps with tasks like explaining pages, answering questions and guiding users to other sites
  • Users can turn AI Window on or off at any time
  • Users can choose from different AI models based on their needs
  • Access starts through a waitlist as Mozilla rolls out the feature

Mozilla says it is building the feature “in the open” and stresses that users stay in control. If someone does not want AI, they can keep using Firefox the same way as before.

AI Window is Mozilla’s third AI feature. It joins the AI chatbot in the Firefox desktop sidebar and the “Shake to Summarise” tool on iOS, which shows a quick AI summary of any web page. Together, these tools position the Firefox AI browser as a serious rival in the emerging AI-first browser category.

Meanwhile, Google Chrome still leads by a big margin. Similarweb data shows Chrome with about 69.33% of the desktop browser market, followed by Microsoft Edge at 15.48%, Safari at 7.5% and Firefox at 4.84%. New AI browsers such as Atlas, Comet and now the Firefox AI browser hope to challenge that lead with “agentic” AI that can take actions for users, not just answer questions.

With its long history, independent Gecko engine and fresh AI push, Firefox is betting that AI can help it regain relevance in the browser wars.
